Our Story

What started as a simple idea between friends has grown into something much bigger than we ever imagined.

In 2014, Johnny Cooper, Sam Marano, and Chris Petrescu were sitting around Sam’s house the weekend before Thanksgiving. Chris tossed out an idea:

“What if we put together a golf tournament for Thanksgiving?”

Sam didn’t hesitate.


“The Gobbler… The Gobbler Classic.”

And just like that, it began. Johnny started reaching out to friends, and the response was immediate.

That first year, multiple tee times filled up for the Saturday before Thanksgiving—and it turned into something unforgettable.

The energy, the camaraderie, the tradition… The Gobbler Classic was born.

When It Became Something More

In year two, the vision shifted.

Johnny had a simple thought:


“What if we used this to help kids?”

Everyone was in.

That year, the group passed the hat and raised $1,300. It wasn’t about the amount—it was about what it represented.

By year three, with the help of Bryan Buckner and Tom Anderson, that number grew to $2,700.

But more importantly—it started making a real impact.

Real Impact, Real Families

Through a partnership with Knightsville Elementary School, and with guidance from Assistant Principal Jackie Fleming, funds were directed to families who truly needed support.

That meant Christmas gifts for children who otherwise wouldn’t have any, paying overdue electric bills, ensuring families had power and heat through the winter, and so much more.

This wasn’t charity for the sake of charity, this was neighbors helping neighbors—directly.

In addition to the local schools, The Gobbler also donates to the Summerville Miracle League and The Dorchester Child Advocacy Center, and in cooperation with SPD, we donate toys for distribution to local children in need.

What The Gobbler Became

From that point forward, The Gobbler Classic became more than just a golf tournament.

It became a mission.

With Johnny leading the charge, the event continued to grow year after year—bringing together a community that shows up not just to play, but to give back.

Today, The Gobbler Gives carries that same spirit forward, and we’re just getting started.
